Miramichi River Valley Route

Explore New Brunswick as you travel alongside the Miramichi River, designated as one of Canada's Great Rivers. The Miramichi River Route follows the river’s edge between the city of Miramichi and the New Brunswick capital of Fredericton and through the forest villages of Eel Ground and Renous (now named Elsipogtog First Nation), as well as Blackville, Doaktown, Ludlow, and Stanley.

 

The Miramichi River Route is a four-season travel destination. The spring brings world-class salmon fly fishing on the Miramichi River. Long famous for its Atlantic salmon fishing, the River attracts celebrities from sports, entertainment, and royalty. Summer events include the largest Irish Festival in the world and the oldest folksong festival in Canada, the Miramichi Folksong Festival. One of the winter highlights is the pond hockey tournament.

 

Depending on when you visit, you can float down the river in a smooth inner tube, learn how to cast for salmon, try out old woodsmen tools, hike through boreal forest on designated trails or by marking, cross over the river on the 190-metre-long McNamee/Priceville suspended footbridge near Doaktown, walk through New Brunswick’s oldest covered bridge opened in 1870 at Nelson Hollow, and simply explore the river’s edge.

 

During your stay, take some time to savor delicious salmon and fiddleheads at local feasts.
